Stocks are plunging and bond prices are rising. Investors are uncertain and anxious about the nuclear crisis in Japan that followed last week's earthquake and tsunami. The Dow Jones industrial average is down more than 200 points.
The market dropped sharply at the start of trading on news that dangerous levels of radiation are leaking from a nuclear plant crippled by last week's disaster. Investors are uneasy not only about the impact the crisis would have on Japan, but on companies in this country. Ten percent of U.S. exports go to Japan.
The Dow is down 207 points, or 1.7 percent, at 11,786. The Standard & Poor's 500 index is down 22, or 1.7 percent, at 1,274. The Nasdaq composite index is down 44, or 1.6 percent, at 2,656.
Bond prices are rising as investors look for secure places for their money. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note is 3.23 percent, down from 3.36 percent late Monday.
